چکیده

This paper describes a generalisation of the Phase Gradient Autofocus (PGA) algorithm that allows strip-map operation. A standard autofocus technique, PGA, uses prominent points within the target scene to estimate the point spread function of the system. PGA was developed for tomographic mode spotlight synthetic aperture radar (SAR) but has limited applicability for side-scan synthetic aperture operation. We show how it can be generalised to work with stripmap geometries and relate our new method to the previous PGA extension to strip-map systems. Strip-map PGA (SPGA) works by employing the (image domain) 2D phase correction technique. Using the scale transform of the imaging system, the 2D phase errors are related to aperture position errors. Robust phase error estimates are obtained by utilising range redundancies. We also present a modified Phase Curvature Autofocus (PCA) algorithm applicable to strip-map operation that also uses the scale transform. Preliminary results of the two algorithms are presented showing a similar performance, and a discussion of the limitations of the algorithms is given.

An experimental study of a new entropy-based SAR autofocus technique

The Stage By Stage Approaching (SSA) entropy minimization approach to synthetic aperture radar (SAR) autofocus is a modern and innovative technique, which has not been compared with other approaches, to date. We provide such a comparison and show that SSA is a most promising autofocus method. In this paper, we evaluate the merit of this algorithm through comparison with the established Phase Gr...

Range Dependent Phase Gradient Autofocus - Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium Proceedings, 1998. IGARSS '98. 1998 IEEE International

The Phase Gradient Autofocus (PGA) algorithm has been widely used in Spotlight Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) to remove motion-induced blurs in the images. The PGA algorithm has been proven to be a superior autofocus method. PGA assumes a narrow beam, which is valid for most SAR systems. However, lower altitude SA& have large range dependencies that cannot be ignored. A new phase estimator for ...

Signal Processing for Synthetic Aperture Sonar Image Enhancement

This thesis contains a description of SAS processing algorithms, offering improvements in Fourier-based reconstruction, motion-compensation, and autofocus. Fourier-based image reconstruction is reviewed and improvements shown as the result of improved system modelling. A number of new algorithms based on the wavenumber algorithm for correcting second order effects are proposed. In addition, a n...

A Wavefront Sensing Method for Synthetic Aperture Sonar Autofocus

Synthetic aperture Sonar (SAS) is a technique for improving sonar resolution by using known sonar motion to lengthen the useful sonar aperture. Unfortunately the images formed with a strip-map SAS are rapidly degraded when there is any perturbation from the known flight-path. This paper outlines a new autofocus procedure for improving SAS imagery, based on wavefront sensing techniques from the ...

Synthetic-aperture radar autofocus by maximizing sharpness.

To focus a synthetic-aperture radar image that is suffering from phase errors, a phase-error estimate is found that, when it is applied, maximizes the sharpness of the image. Closed-form expressions are derived for the gradients of a sharpness metric with respect to phase-error parameters, including both a point-by-point (nonparametric) phase function and coefficients of a polynomial expansion....
